Sit back and relax on board the Lockview IV or the Lockview V – as Captain Mike and his crew navigate through one of the most spectacular portions of the historic Erie Canal.

During your 2-hour Erie Canal cruise along “life in the fast lane” you’ll marvel as you:

Cruise under the curious ”Upside-Down Railroad Bridge”.
Experience ’Locking Through”- being raised and lowered 49 feet in Locks 34 &35.
Be amazed at the 20-foot high stone walls of the 1800s “Rock Cut’ and stone towpath blasted of solid stone with powder left over from the War of 1812.
Travel under the widest bridge in the U.S.

The Grand Old Erie Canal connects the Hudson River and the Atlantic Ocean at sea level with the Niagara River and the Great Lakes at 570-feet above sea level. This 363-mile engineering feat was dug by hand between 1817 and 1825. More people migrated westward on the Erie Canal than later went through Ellis Island, opening up the American Frontier for development. Originally 83 locks were use to raise and lower boats, but none as dramatically as those in the aptly named Lockport. To overcome the 49-foot tall Niagara Escarpment – the same rock formation that forms Niagara Falls – Lockport was chosen as the location of the famous “Flight of Five”. This twin set of 5-tiered locks allowed boats to travel up in one set and down in the other. After the canal was enlarged in the early 1900s, one set was retained to serve as a spillway. The other was replaced by the current set of Locks 34 and 35, which still serve boat traffic today.
