Explore the trails at the Beaver Meadow Audubon Center! This nature preserve is about 45 minutes away from Asa Ransom House. It stretches out over 324 acres and features everything from meadows to wetlands. It’s most known for its eight miles of well-maintained trails. There’s nothing like crunching through white snow while exploring the gorgeous Upstate New York terrain. If you don’t have a pair of snowshoes or don’t want to travel with them, there are pairs available to rent at the preserve.
Chestnut Ridge Park
Grab your sled and head over to Chestnut Ridge Park! While this gorgeous park has plenty of opportunities for a variety of winter sports, the onsite toboggan chutes and sled hill are what has made this park iconic. The main hill is more than 600 feet long, though there are other hills that can be utilized if you prefer snowboarding. This is also a great park for cross-country skiing or snowshoeing.
The iconic Canalside provides plenty of fun things to do in Buffalo in the winter. Stop by The Ice at Canalside, a public skating rink that is sure to provide a fun day. Admission to the rink is $6 and skate rentals are just $4. If you’ve never skated before or you’re a little rusty, you can rent ice bikes for $12 per half hour. Never heard of ice bikes? That’s because these unique bikes, which allow you to pedal and steer on the ice as if you were on a regular bike, were designed and manufactured locally. This is the definition of a true Buffalo experience: you can’t find these anywhere else! If you’re feeling comfortable on a pair of skates, then rent a curling lane and give this winter sport a try! Canalside is a sure-fire way to have a fun winter day!

The Buffalo Museum of History is one of the oldest museums in the area. It was founded in 1862 as a way to showcase regional paintings, photographs, artifacts, and manuscripts with the general public. The museum quickly grew in popularity and has since expanded its collection to over 100,00 objects, 200,00 photographs, and 20,000 books! The museum is open from Tuesday to Sunday and admission is just $7 for adults.
Albright-Knox Art Gallery
1862 must have been a great year for culture in Buffalo! The Albright-Knox Art Gallery has been collecting and exhibiting art since that iconic year. The collections have included pieces from the most transcendent artists, like van Gogh, Monet, Frida Kahlo, Georgia O’Keeffe, and Picasso. The museum is open from Tuesday to Sunday. Admission is $12 for adults. Public tours of the collection offered on Thursdays, Friday, and Sundays at 1:30 p.m., and on Saturdays at 11:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. You’ll definitely want to take one of these tours to get the inside scoop on the artist and exhibits.
Buffalo and Erie County Naval & Military Park
The Buffalo and Erie County Naval & Military Park first opened in 1976. It aims to give you a close look at our nation’s military history. This includes fantastic tours of vessels, fascinating exhibits, and displays of historic documents, uniforms, and military gear. The museum is open daily from the 25th of March to the end of October. Admission is just $12 per person.
Frank Lloyd Wright’s Martin House Complex
Take a close look at the work of one of America’s most famous architects at Frank Lloyd Wright’s Martin House Complex. This six-structure complex was originally built for Darwin D. While most holiday events are geared towards younger audiences, the Buffalo Botanical Gardens features exhibits for the holiday season that are perfect for all ages. Beautiful poinsettias with stunning Christmas decorations line surround you as you tour their indoor garden. Tickets are just $11 for adults and $10 for seniors, ages 62 and up!
Tour Old Fort Niagara by Candlelight
Old Fort Niagara is a fascinating and educational historic site that dates back to over 300 years ago. The structure you see today is often referred to as “The French Castle,” thanks to it having been built by the French is 1726. The British then gained control of the fort in 1759. It was passed between the British and the Americans over the years until it was finally ceded to the United States (for the second time) at the end of the War of 1812.
During The Castle by Candlelight event, the French Castle will be tastefully decorated for the season and lit entirely by candles. You’ll be experiencing the fort just as they would have in 1759! There will also be historic figures wandering the grounds if you have any questions about the site. Make sure you stand for the firing of the grand feu de joie! Admission is $10 per person and you can feel good about attending as this event is a fundraiser to benefit educational programming.

Some History on Martin House Complex
The Martin House Complex features six buildings that were originally built in the early 1900s. Frank Lloyd Wright was commissioned by Darwin D. Martin to design it after Martin was introduced to Wright’s work. Wright has been recorded as referring to the Martin House Complex as his opus and the site plans were pinned to his drawing table for close to 50 years.
The George Barton House
To get a feel of Frank Lloyd Wright’s abilities, Martin commissioned him to first design a home for Martin’s sister, Delta, and her husband, George Barton. The George Barton House, sometimes referred to as the George and Delta Barton House, fulfilled Martin’s aspiration to bring his family closer together while getting a livable sample of Wright’s design abilities.
Tour the Facility
Visitors can only explore our the interior of the Martin House Complex on one of the many guided tours offered at the estate. The Martin House+ Tour is the most popular tour available. It lasts two hours and will take you through every building on the complex. Along the way, your guide will expand upon the history of the Martin and Wright story, giving context to the incredible site.
There is a shorter tour available that, unlike the two-hour tour, is wheelchair accessible. This tour lasts only for one hour and leads guests through the primary first-floor rooms of the main house, the pergola, the conservatory, and the carriage house.

Wheatfield Pumpkin Farm is open from late September through October from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. On the nights that feature the Haunted Hayride, the hours are extended.
Visit the Petting Zoo
Goats, cows, and horses, oh my! During your visit to Wheatfield Pumpkin Farm, you’ll definitely want to stop by the petting zoo. There are plenty of barnyard animals just waiting for your visit! Make sure to take some hand sanitizer or wipes with you, just in case.
Take a Haunted Hayride
The bravest among us will love the Haunted Hayride! Check the schedule before you embark if you plan on taking the hayride as it only runs once or twice a week. The hayrides begin at dusk and run every 15 minutes. Anyone aged 16 or younger must be accompanied by at least one adult to ride the hayride. Tickets for the hayride are $8 for adults and $6 for children 13 or younger. Remember to bring cash with you! Wheatfield Pumpkin Farm does not accept debit or credit cards or checks.

The Letchworth State Park trails total to about 66-miles. No matter your skill level or preference, you’ll find a trail perfect for you here.
